Peshawar: More than 3,000 people including 168 children have been killed in last 7 years. The drone missile attacked have caused loss to as many as 775 lives while in total 2,992 people are said to be killed. Militants as well as innocent people have had been victim of the targeted operation. In the year 2006, 69 children died while the attack in 2009 swept away the prominent militants of Tehreek-e-Taliban group.
According to the report details, after every four day a drone strike is done. Even in the holy month of Ramadan, the attacks were carried out frequently. However the national and provincial governments have passed resolution in the assembly against the frequent attacks that often kills the civilians, including children, aged and young innocent people at mass scale.

The Punjab Assembly in its session condemned the continuous attacks stating them to be violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty, country’s peace and most importantly that of the international law. The high officials in the session said that the new government wants to eradicate terrorism and the drone attacks are unacceptable at all levels.
Federal government has been directed to look into the matter in this connection. The resolution movers stated that Pakistan enjoins US for enhancing the bi-lateral ties based on mutual co-operation and respect. In the assembly it was also decided that a national consensus be formed to counter against terrorism activities.

10 Reasons Why You Should Attend PTI Protest against Price Hike 22nd December 2013

10 Reasons Why You Should Attend PTI Protest against Price Hike 22nd December 2013

“If you don’t know where you are going every road will take you there” Chinese Proverb
Gone are the days when there was no planning prior to coming into power. In almost all the developed countries even India (Developing) political parties get votes on their manifestos on how to deal with key issues. May 11th 2013 gave an opportunity to PMLN to form Federal Government.
Hence it is for the 3rd time Nawaz Sharif would become Prime Minister of Pakistan with his experienced team ready to steer the ship out of what former government had left them in. A lot of good things were expected in the economic area. Ishaq Dar as Finance Minister meant a guy acceptable to IMF as the former FM’s needs their ‘nod’ as per past practices.
Past 6 months of PMLN performance in economy give only one indicator, that they haven’t learned anything from the past.

1. Inflationary Impact & Indirect Taxation:-
o Consumer Price Index (CPI) Inflation has gone to 10.9% in November 2013 as compared to 9.1% in Oct 13 & 6.9% in same period for year 2012 when govt came in power it was around 5% almost doubling the Inflations. The purchasing power of people has decreased viciously. In current budget GST has been added from 16% to 19% thus adding indirect taxes on almost every product.
2. Exchange Rate Instability & Foreign Exchange Reserves:-
o Dollar $ has gone escalating to 110 Rs from 98 Rs. Investors’ confidence has shattered badly with the government’s lame attempts to curb the Exchange Rate Stability. This means 6 months back a product which costs Rs 98 will now be for Rs 110.
o Foreign Exchange Reserves have fallen to 12 year low by $2.9BN. Record breaking downward spiral for economy.
3. Unemployment:-
o Gas Load Shedding in winter season means at least 5 Million laborers have to sit at homes for another 3 months till end of this winter season.
4. Total & Foreign Debts:-
o Debts have added by Stooping 1 Trillion (1000 Billion) Rupees in just 3 Months putting additional pressure on Exchequer. Pakistan’s Debt to GDP ratio is Greater than 55%.
Mean Rs 55 out of 100 are paid in debts.
o Foreign Debts have increased by Rs 403 Billion due to Currency Devaluation Taking total debts to Rs 15 Trillion. In an Economy where more than 55% of our budget goes down as Debt Repayment the currency devaluation worsens the picture adding 70Bn with each Rupee Rise in the price of Dollar vs. Rupee.
5. Ridiculing Investors:-
o While Mr. Dar adds to the agony of businessmen & banks seeking $ for foreign trade payments, tipping the traders to sell of their dollars. It’s like ridiculing those who have invested in country with ever rising cost of production thanks to electricity prices being doubled in 6 months.
6. Tax Loopholes:-
o The directionless Fiscal policy portrays lack of will government shows towards Tax Collection rather than expanding the Tax Base taking off some pressure from the Salaried Class of whose tax is deducted at source.
o Government seems least interested in adding professionals, agriculturists & businessman who are exempt from paying taxes.
7. Amnesty For Tax Evaders & Money Launders:-
o Ironically promoting Amnesty Practices allowing Tax Evaders to pay taxes and get 10 years exemption from getting Tax Audits, asking the Tax Evaders to show their appropriated earnings government is encouraging to present unreal picture and getting away with additional facilities of avoiding any penalty, additional tax & audit.
o Tax To GDP Lowest Ratio: - Such Taxation practices are Pakistan has one of the lowest Tax to GDP Ratio in the world (<10%) makes it even worse off begging IMF for further loans to pay off the previous ones.
8. Cut in Development Expenses & Subsidy Removal:-
o Public Sector Development Program has cut the developmental budget to $321 bn by eradication of subsidies on energy Tariffs. Mr. Dar has admitted SBP printed fresh notes worth 280 Bn in 4 months a short remedy for paying off Circular Debt.
9. Poverty & Basic Educational Situation:-
o 2/3 rd are not able to contain food 2 times a day 2 Billion children are out of the schools but the focus is somewhere else.
10. Political Gimmicks:-
o Rather than paying heed to above figures a Political Gimmick has been brought to light. PM Youth Loan Scheme a portfolio worth 100 Billion chaired by none other than Daughter of PM Maryam Nawaz Sharif who apparently is doing a P.H.D in politics but has no prior experience of handling such position before. This is the level of interest Ruling Party is giving to 180 Million people. Procedure of this scheme is surely questionable. One cannot obtain a loan without having guarantee of a either

o A Govt official 15th Grade or higher.
o Person having bank account worth 150% of loan applied for.
In both the above cases a guarantor has to undertake to payback the dues & stand responsible if the principal debtor fails to pay the loan. This condition makes it virtually impossible for the applicant to find a person fulfilling either of the above conditions. Its Ridiculing masses at its peak. If somehow one finds a Guarantee he will get a loan @8% Markup repayable from 13th month of its issuance. In the current economic scenario it is hard for the existing business to break even. The chances of such loans ending as default are very high.
These economic Indicators are a big question mark on performance of present Government who have already left their predecessors Incompetence far behind within mere 200 Days.

Rest in Peace Sanity

KP's "Real" Issues

KP's "Real" Issues

Published in Daily Dawn (08/12/2013)

http://www.dawn.com/news/1061204/kps-real-issues
  • THIS is in response to news item “KP’s real issues succumb to PTI’s populist approach” (Nov 25).
  • The report seemed to be a more of PTI opponents’ views than a factual analysis of the situation in KP. The reporter also seemed to have played it safe by quoting statements of ANP and JUI (F) leaders and a professor from the University of Peshawar, creating a particular spin.
  • Fulfilling electoral promise and implementing the APC resolution cannot just be termed populist. The issues faced by the people of KP as quoted in the story are not unique to the province. In fact, they are faced by all Pakistanis across the country. Price hike and unemployment are not governance issues but are a result of federal incompetence and the overall financial gloom in the country. Vague remarks on governance and phrases like ‘many think’, and then quotes by the JUI(F), ANP leaders and a professor are not convincing, and ironically discredits the argument.
  • Bullied by the ‘thana and patwari’ culture and deprived of health and education facilities, the common Pakistani is also faced with the unending increase in prices and security issues.
  • Perhaps a survey on the real issues in KP could help gauge the progress in the mentioned areas for the story. Snap checks in hospitals, the thana and patwari culture, mystery shopping, the RTI Law, visiting schools, testing the e-government facilities and getting feedback from residents could also help in gathering data, rather than just calling PTI critics and building a story based on their opinions.
  • The story links industrial shutdown in KP to the subsidies withdrawn in the 1990s, quoting the case of Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate. Factually, in 2008, gas and electricity load shedding was one of the major issues faced by the project. The subsidies referred to are as follows:
  •
  • Income tax holiday for eight years
  • Exemption from sales-tax for five years
  • Exemption from custom duty on imported machinery
  • Duty-free import of raw materials 50pc concession in electricity tariff
  • None of these incentives is a provincial subject, and the fact that one of the biggest industrial groups had also stopped functioning in the area tells us that there is more to the subject than just the withdrawal of incentives.
  • There can be a multitude of reasons for the shutdown in the past, but who in their right minds will reinvest in a province battered by terrorism?
  • The story conveniently avoided a holistic view of the situation, which failed to focus on the real issues.

Doing the right thing

Doing the right thing

Placing his problematic and counterproductive political stance on peace talks with the Taliban aside, if there is one thing Imran Khan knows how to do, it is compassionate social work for some life-threatening causes. Everyone is well aware of Shaukat Khanum, among other initiatives, that he took up in order to help cancer patients. It definitely bolstered his image among Pakistanis as well as the global audience that remains ever tuned into updates on Khan. But his drive against polio has been most remarkable – and perhaps most politically relevant – in the past few days. After inaugurating a three-day anti-polio campaign in Nowshera on Wednesday, Khan urged the Taliban to nark the belligerency and come to the table for dialogue.
Khan went further on to state that those working selflessly to eradicate the polio virus from Pakistan’s youngest and most vulnerable segment of society, are true “mujahideen” and were performing their moral duties despite a slew of threats of attacks. Some may have an issue with turning the cause into a religious case but we don’t have too many options to begin with. If this is the rhetoric that dispels paranoia about polio vaccination, then so be it.
JUI-S’s Chief Maulana Sami-ul-Haq joined the cause as well. It goes without saying that when it comes to the issue of a child’s health, religious explanation justifying it, is unnecessary. However if Sami-ul-Haq’s endorsement catalyzes otherwise reluctant and wary parents into vaccinating their children against the polio virus, there is certainly no qualm to raise. Something is – really – better than nothing, in this scenario. Endangering the lives of innocent children under whatever bizarre logic is only a step backwards, and given how dire circumstances are – with relentless attacks on anti-polio campaigners – any and all support, from politicians, to religious clerics, is more than welcome.

Two Hundred Dollar Man

This is in response to Mr Irfan Hussain's Column “A CIA agent’s take on drones” (14/12/2013).

Killer Drones

Drones Issue

  • I am not sure what Mr Hussain was trying to achieve through building an argument around someone i.e. the CIA agent in Pakistan who is busy selling blood of his own people for mere $200 a month. The points put across by the agent didn’t seem anything more than a traitor justifying his jobs-worth. What should one expect from someone selling the motherland for $200? If it is our war then what’s the justification of CIA agents operating
  • from our soil providing intelligence to the US? It gives strength to the notion that the American CIA is waging a secret war on our soil through its network of spies.Mr Hussain's central character then in his excitement goes further saying the following:
  • "...From a military standpoint, it’s a success for the United States. And I contribute to that success."
  • Does it not tell whose war we have tangled ourselves into?
  • Rubbishing the innocent death toll including that of women and children by the agent and later on admitting the same didn’t make sense. Regardless of numbers, isn’t loss of one innocent life, one too many? Besides, it’s not just one person but a whole affected family or clan that is more likely to be sucked into a blood feud with the state. I leave it to Mr Hussain to do the maths.
  • About the misconception that none of Pakistan’s laws apply to FATA. Perhaps the writer ignored the fact that it is the government of Pakistan that is still governing FATA through colonial set of laws brought in by the British in 1901 to counter Pakhtun opposition to their rule and unfortunately little has been done since then to integrate FATA into Pakistan, for the same reason i.e. to protect the ruling elite’s interests. Not integrating and extending the writ of the State to FATA is not due to the situation but due to the administrative arrangements of the state of Pakistan. It is also against the will of people of FATA. Read FATA declaration published 25/06/2013 in various papers. There is practically no writ of the government in Lyari and various other parts of the country, what shall we do? Drone the areas?
  • The US AID $20 billion in 12 years that includes $10 Billion of CSF represents a mere 0.3% of our GDP and peanuts when compared to the loss of $100 billion due to this pointless war. Contextually, Mr Haggle’s warning may be a blessing in disguise for Pakistan, as for once we may learn to live without cap in hand. Besides, if it is a price tag for our blood and sovereignty, then we are better off without it.
